Vision

Department of Biochemistry at AIIMS Bathinda was established in August 2019 with a vision to be recognized as a centre for excellence in Biochemistry that provides professional patient care at affordable cost with holistic approach, competency based medical education and research to understand the role of fundamental principles of Biochemistry in human health and diseases.

Mission

•    To prepare health care professionals with a sound knowledge in Medical Biochemistry which they can apply in their clinical practice & research.
•    To provide medical laboratory testing services in accordance with the applicable standards to satisfy the expectation of patients.
•    To promote translational research for continual improvement of quality of patient care.

Services Available in the department- Academics

Academic Programmes

  • Undergraduate: Department is providing undergraduate teaching to MBBS and BSc Nursing students. Interactive small group teaching is preferred. Integrated approach is applied for MBBS teaching. SCAMPER is integrated two days inter college event which is being organized every year in collaboration with Anatomy and Physiology 
  • Post Graduate : Department has MD Biochemistry course providing comprehensive training in Clinical Biochemistry and Biomedical Research. The Department has well established laboratories with state of art research facilities.
  • Department is providing regular orientation and trainings to various postgraduates regarding good clinical lab practices to make them aware about commmon errors in sampling                                                                                  
  • PhD: Biochemistry is the first Department to start with PhD programme at AIIMS Bathinda.
  • Observership: Department is providing short term observership to students from various universities across the country.
  • CME/WORKSHOPS/EVENTS: In order to promote an atmosphere of continual learning, the Department regularly conducts symposia, workshops and conferences at national and global scale.
  • Department is organizing at least one PMC accredited CME every year and celebrates days of clinical significance like World DNA day, Medical Lab Professional Week and Immunology Day and many more days are celebrated every year.

  • Tumor markers – CEA, CA 19.9, CA125, CA 15.3, PSA, AFP
  • Inflammatory markers – CRP, Procalcitonin
  • Nutritional Assays - Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Folate, Iron profile, Ferritin
  • POCT- Cardiac markers (Nt-pro BNP, Troponin I, CkMb) and ABG/VBG analysis
  • Metabolic profile: Newborn Screening
  • Maternal screening for chromosomal disorders – Dual, Triple markers
  • ELISA Investigations- tTG, ANA

Laboratory Services: 

  • OPD/IPD Diagnostic: The Diagnostic laboratory of Department of Biochemistry at AIIMS Bathinda commenced its operations in the month of December, 2019. 
  • At present, the following diagnostic services are being offered in the OPD laboratory:
  • Routine, chemistry and specialized Biochemistry tests, HbA1c, immunoassay tests and Urine tests
  • Location: Room No.5111, C Block, OPD Building
  • Samples are collected/ received in Room No.5018 in the OPD Building for OPD patients and in respective wards for IPD patients
  • Timings of OPD Collection Area: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday to Saturday)
  • Test reports: Test reports are updated online through HMIS
  • Turnaround time (TAT): Interim reports are available  06  hours from the time of sample collection.

 

STAT LAB    
The services available in the stat lab are: Routine Biochemistry tests, Cerebrospinal/ fluid analysis, POCT -Cardiac markers, ABG/VBG Analysis

  • Location: STAT Lab, Room no-A041, Gound Floor, Emergency area, IPD Building

 

Samples are collected in the respective wards/emergency/triage area
24 X 7 lab for emergency care

  • Test reports: Test reports are updated online through HMIS
  • Turnaround time (TAT): Interim reports are available  02   hours from the time of sample collection.
  • Both OPD lab and stat lab are functional 24*7

  • Medical College Diagnostic Wing:Newborn screening, ELISA based testing for various parameters, Maternal screening,Molecular Diagnostics
  • Location: Department of Biochemistry, B Block, 3rd floor, Medical College Building

 

Samples are collected/ received in Room No.

  • Timings: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday to Saturday)
  • Test reports: Test reports are updated online through HMIS
  • Turnaround time (TAT):  one week from the time of sample collection.

 

Diagnostic services available under Diagnostic wing are-

  • Quality control: The laboratory routinely follows daily Internal Quality Control (IQC) procedures to ensure quality reports. The laboratory has an active External Quality Assurance (EQAS) Programme for improved validation of testing services.
  • Accreditation: The Department is committed to get the laboratory services accredited by the National Accreditation Board for testing Laboratories (NABL) which is under process

 

Services Available in the department-Research

The Department of Biochemistry is intended to establish interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment focused to understand the biochemical aspect in relation with molecular and clinical aspects of diseases and to develop interventional therapies. All faculties of the department are involved in active area of research like Stem Cells Biology, Cancer Signalling, HIV associated secondary complications and various ICMR/ other national projects. Therefore, to supplement research activities in area of Clinical Biochemistry, the Department is equipped with most advance and sophisticated research instruments. Faculties are also working to initiate various national and international collaborative research project in the department.

Department is working in the direction of establishing a specialised centre for screening of congenital genetic inborn errors of metabolism, mutational studies and develop dedicated Molecular Diagnostic laboratory
Department also envisions to start with Gastric Biochemistry panel , serum protein electrophoresis and Immune markers in near future
