Trauma



 

The Department of Trauma & Emergency, AIIMS Bathinda aims to provide comprehensive, timely, evidence-based and multidisciplinary care to patients presenting with trauma and medical-surgical emergencies. The department functions as a coordinated platform for rapid triage, resuscitation, stabilization, definitive management and appropriate disposition of critically ill and injured patients.

Vision

To develop the Department of Trauma & Emergency, AIIMS Bathinda into a centre of excellence in trauma and emergency care, education, training and research, providing timely, high-quality and evidence-based care while developing skilled healthcare professionals capable of managing routine emergencies, major trauma and mass-casualty incidents.

Excellence in Medical Education and Training

  • To provide structured undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in trauma care, emergency medicine, resuscitation and critical emergency management.
  • To regularly conduct National Emergency Life Support (NELS) courses and other structured emergency-care training programmes for doctors, nurses and paramedical personnel.
  • To conduct provider courses in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and promote standardized principles of trauma assessment and resuscitation.
  • To organize structured training programmes in Mass Casualty Management (MCM), disaster preparedness and hospital incident-response systems.
  • To conduct regular training in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and other resuscitation programmes for healthcare personnel.
  • To organize simulation-based training, trauma simulations and mock drills for major trauma and mass-casualty situations.
  • To promote continuing professional development through CMEs, workshops, seminars, journal clubs and multidisciplinary trauma meetings.

Fellowship and Advanced Training

The department envisages establishing structured fellowship programmes to develop professionals with advanced expertise in trauma care, including:

  • Fellowship in Trauma Surgery
  • Fellowship in Trauma Anaesthesia

These programmes will provide focused clinical exposure, multidisciplinary training, procedural skills, critical-care experience, simulation-based education and academic development in the comprehensive management of injured patients.

Clinical Services

The Department of Trauma & Emergency provides round-the-clock assessment and management of patients presenting with acute illness and injury, including:

24 × 7 Emergency and Trauma Services

  • Rapid triage and prioritization of patients
  • Primary and secondary trauma survey
  • Advanced trauma resuscitation
  • Airway management and emergency ventilation
  • Haemodynamic stabilization and management of shock
  • Management of polytrauma
  • Initial management of traumatic brain and spinal injuries
  • Management of chest, abdominal and musculoskeletal trauma
  • Emergency pain management and procedural analgesia
  • Point-of-care assessment and monitoring of critically ill patients
  • Coordination for emergency imaging, blood transfusion and operative intervention
  • Referral and transfer to appropriate specialty, operating theatre or intensive care unit
  • Mass-casualty and disaster-response services

 

Emergency Services Schedule

Trauma and Emergency Services: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

 

Diagnostic and Procedural Services

Depending upon clinical indication and availability, the department facilitates or performs:

  • Point-of-care ultrasonography including Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST/eFAST)
  • Bedside haemodynamic and respiratory assessment
  • Electrocardiography
  • Arterial blood gas analysis
  • Emergency airway procedures
  • Vascular access including central and peripheral access
  • Emergency thoracic and other life-saving procedures as clinically indicated
  • Coordination for urgent radiological investigations including X-ray, ultrasonography and CT imaging
